From soft walls to infrared branes

چکیده
Five-dimensional warped spaces with soft walls are generalizations of the standard Randall-Sundrum compactifications, where instead of an infrared brane one has a curvature singularity (with vanishing warp factor) at finite proper distance in the bulk. We project the physics near the singularity onto a hypersurface located a small distance away from it in the bulk. This results in a completely equivalent description of the soft wall in terms of an effective infrared brane, hiding any singular point. We perform explicitly this calculation for two classes of soft wall backgrounds used in the literature. The procedure has several advantages. It separates in a clean way the physics of the soft wall from the physics of the fivedimensional bulk, facilitating a more direct comparison with standard two-brane warped compactifications. Moreover, consistent soft walls show a sort of universal behavior near the singularity which is reflected in the effective brane Lagrangian. Thirdly, for many purposes, a good approximation is obtained by assuming the bulk background away from the singularity to be the usual Randall-Sundrum metric, thus making the soft wall backgrounds better analytically tractable. We check the validity of this procedure by calculating the spectrum of bulk fields and comparing it to the exact result, finding very good agreement.

Counting Domain Walls in N = 1 Super Yang - Mills
We study the multiplicity of BPS domain walls in N =1 super Yang-Mills, by maximally Higgsing the theory with fundamental matter. The number of domain walls connecting two specified vacuum states is then determined via the Witten index of the induced worldvolume theory. This theory is a sigma model with a Grassmanian target space which arises as the coset associated with the global symmetries b...

We study the multiplicity of BPS domain walls in N =1 super Yang-Mills theory, by passing to a weakly coupled Higgs phase through the addition of fundamental matter. The number of domain walls connecting two specified vacuum states is then determined via the Witten index of the induced worldvolume theory, which is invariant under the deformation to the Higgs phase. The worldvolume theory is a s...

متن کاملFormation of cosmological brane defects
We study cosmological formation of D-term strings, axionic strings, domain walls and Q-balls in braneworld models of the Hanany-Witten type. For the Dterm strings, we show that the strings are the daughter branes extended between mother branes. We show that the domain walls can be produced by conventional cosmological phase transitions. In this case, the formation of the domain walls is induced...
متن کاملFormation of monopoles and domain walls after brane inflation
We study cosmological defect formation induced by brane creation after brane inflation. Contrary to the previous arguments, production of monopoles and domain walls are not negligible. Monopoles and domain walls are formed by the creation of daughter branes that are extended between mother branes.
